Iowa Football Recruiting Classes 2008 and 2009

Iowa 2008 Recruiting

OL-Casey McMillan 2 Stars
K-Trent Mossbrucker 2 Stars
Ath-DeMarco Paine 3 Stars
WR-Shane Prater 2 Stars
DB-Shaun Prater 3 Stars
DE-Riley Reiff 3 Stars
RB-Adam Robinson 2 Stars
DE-Jason Semmes 2 Stars
WR-Khalif Staten 3 Stars
DB-Jack Swanson 2 Stars
QB-James Vandenberg 3 Stars
QB-John Wienke 3 Stars

There were no 4 star recruits according to Rivals.com. Jewel Hampton and Adam Robinson were two 2 star players that played pretty solid, but both were out of the program by their junior years. Riley Reiff was the best player in the class, ending up as a first round pick.

This was a big class, but hardly any of these players played meaningful minutes or any minutes at all. Ferentz, Herman, Shaun Prater, Reiff, Robinson and Vandenberg were the only players that ended up in the starting lineup. Bigach and Gaglione did last year, but weren't that great. Blackwell, Brinson, Cato, Griggs, Guillory, Hampton, Lowe, Paine, Shane Prater, Semmes, and Staten all transferred or quit. The other players who stayed: Castillo, Gimm, McMillan, Mossbrucker, Swanson and Wienke didn't do much at all. Prater and Reiff are the only NFL guys out of this class besides Hampton who didn't play with the 49ers and Herman who probably won't stick around long.

2009
DE-Dominic Alvis 2 Stars
TE-Conor Boffeli 3 Stars
DB-Joshua Brown 2 Stars
OL-Drew Clark 3 Stars
Ath-Jordan Cotton 3 Stars
DT-Scott Covert 2 Stars
WR-Keenan Davis 4 Stars
LB-Shane DiBona 2 Stars
Ath-Dakota Getz 2 Stars
LB-Tyler Harrell 2 Stars
LB-Martin Hopkins 2 Stars
QB-Micah Hyde 2 Stars
OL-Nolan MacMillan 3 Stars
OL-Matt Murphy 2 Stars
WR-Stephane Ngoumou 2 Stars
LB-Jake Reisen 2 Stars
RB-Brad Rogers 3 Stars
TE-Anthony Schiavone 2 Stars
OL-Brett Van Sloten 2 Stars
RB-Brandon Wegher 4 Stars

This class was smaller than the one before and even had a couple 4 star guys, who never really lived up to 4 star status. Keenan Davis was a solid player though. Wegher had a promising career, looked great in his rookie year. Look at all the players who never made it the full four years: Brown, Covert, DiBona-inj, Getz-inj, Harrell, Hopkins, Murphy, Ngoumou, Rogers-inj, Schiavone, Wegher. Of the ones who stuck around, not much star power. Davis was a solid WR and might get a shot in the NFL. Hyde was a nice surprise for a 2 star and could hear his name called during the draft. Alvis has panned out decent at DE and has another year. Boffeli got stuck behind some talented OL but could get his shot this year. Clark never cracked the lineup. Cotton has been a solid return guy, but hasn't amounted to much at WR. MacMillan looked good when healthy. Reisen rarely played. Rogers was a great FB, but injured. Van Sloten has been a nice 2 star surprise.

Looking at both of these classes, I think this sums up why the Hawkeyes sucked last year. Way too many players left, and many of the "projects" didn't pan out.

Baseball Season is Here!!!

The beginning of April means the beginning of baseball season! My team, the Milwaukee Brewers started their season off with a win over the Colorado Rockies, before losing the next two. The offense should be pretty stellar this season, but the pitching could be a question mark.

The infield looks solid as it did a year ago.
1B will be Corey Hart and Alex Gonzalez, Hart is currently injured. Mat Gamel got knocked out for the year again.
2B will be Rickie Weeks who is off to a great start.
SS will be Jean Segura and Gonzalez, Segura is off to a nice start.
3B is Aramis Ramirez who has already hit three doubles, on pace for 162.
LF Ryan Braun, already has a homerun.
CF Carlos Gomez, off to a slow start at the plate after his best offensive season a year ago.
RF Aoki started strong in the first game, and should have a solid year.
C will be platooned by Jonathan Lucroy and Martin Maldonado, both had nice years last year.
SP Yo Gallardo one of my favorites, Marco Estrada, Wily Peralta the rookie, Kyle Lohse and Mike Fiers.
The pen could struggle this year, and John Axford needs to step up as the closer, he's struggled early.

The Albuquerque Isotopes kick off their season today vs the Iowa Cubs! I went to a few Iowa Cubs in my day as a child, and now I live a few blocks from Isotopes park. Looking at their roster, they have a great outfield this year, shouldn't have a hard time putting up runs. The I-Cubs have Brad Nelson, who was drafted by the Brewers and played against my high school in Iowa. He was a huge prospect before breaking his wrist and hasn't been the same since. Hopefully he can hit the bigs another time before he retires. Should be a fun year!

Iowa vs Baylor NIT Championship

I know it's the NIT Championship, but I'm excited enough to leave class early to watch the Hawkeyes play Baylor for a chance at the title! Iowa has been playing great in the last month, Jon Miller from hawkeyenation.com pointed out that Iowa has had double-digit leads in 12 of their last 13 contests, which is pretty impressive. Roy Marble has been rolling and should be tournament MVP if the Hawks win tonight, but Baylor should be no easy task.

Baylor is 22-14 on the season, here's how they fared against teams that made the dance.
L at Gonzaga by 7
L at Kansas by 17
W vs Oklahoma State by 10
L vs Oklahoma by 3
L at Iowa State by 8
L at Oklahoma State by 2
L at Kansas State by 20
L vs Iowa State by 5
L at Oklahoma by 14
L vs Kansas State by 3
W vs Kansas by 23
L vs Oklahoma State by 2

Looking at that, they didn't do that well against the big boys, except whooping Kansas and Oklahoma State.

Baylor is lead by Pierre Jackson, who was actually recruited by Iowa, he averages almost 20 points per game, and is fun to watch. Cory Jefferson and Isaiah Austin both average 13 a game for a high scoring Baylor team.

Jackson is a 5'10" SR Jefferson is a 6'9" JR and Austin is a 7'1" FR
Austin was one of the top recruits in the country and a McDonald's All-American. This could be a high scoring game, much like the Iowa-Oregon game a year ago in the NIT.

No matter the outcome of the game, it's a been a fun ride this season, and I look for even bigger things from the Hawkeyes next season! Go Hawkeyes.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs Maryland Terrapins

The Iowa Hawkeyes are 24-12 and will face Maryland (25-12) tonight in the Final Four of the NIT at Madison Square Garden in NYC. I know it's the NIT, but it's still exciting for an Iowa fan, for the team to be playing in April! Roy Devyn Marble has been lighting up the other teams thus far in the tournament and will need to have a big night if the Hawkeyes want to knock off the Terrapins. This will be a familiar matchup in the coming years as Maryland is slated to join the Big 10.

Maryland has a huge force in the middle, 7'1" Alex Len, who is a projected NBA lottery pick in June. Hopefully, Adam Woodbury and Gabe Olaseni can step up and slow him down. Doing some research on Len, it seems he struggles with shorter scrappier defenders, maybe the Hawks can send Basabe after him.

Marble will have to play like he has all tournament long, and Aaron White will have to play a little better than he did against Virginia.

Key players to watch for Maryland: Dez Wells SO 6'5" 13.2 Pts/G Alex Len 11.8 Pts/G

Maryland's top 3 scores are Sophomore's and their fourth is a Freshmen. Very young team that could be dangerous next year if Len stays.

Maryland started their season with a loss to Kentucky by 3, then went on a huge run winning 13 straight.
