College Football Week 14

Well, the Hawkeyes did it! A 12-0 regular season. I'm still in shock. Not all of the games have been pretty, but I love this team. They haven't trailed in the fourth quarter at all this year and they haven't trailed in a game since the Illinois game on October 10th. That's pretty impressive even if they have had a "weak schedule." The Iowa offense wasn't sharp against Nebraska, but they got a couple of huge runs from Jordan Canzeri and forced Tommy Armstrong to throw four interceptions to help seal their perfect season.

This is one of my favorite Hawkeye teams that I've ever watched. They play hard and they play as a team...and they keep winning. As I've said before, I have come to realize that Iowa will probably never win a national championship in football in my lifetime, and I'm ok with that, as long as they keep producing winning seasons and putting players in the NFL. They're always fun to watch. A national championship would be pretty amazing, but there are certainly teams that could beat them this year. I do think they have a great shot at beating Michigan State on Saturday if they can cause them to make mistakes. The Hawkeyes and Spartans are pretty similar teams and it should be a good matchup. They have three similar opponents this year: Purdue, Nebraska and Indiana. Iowa beat all three, obviously, and Michigan State lost to Nebraska. Iowa beat Purdue by 20, the Spartans only beat them by 3; but Michigan State beat Indiana by 26 and the Hawkeyes beat them by 8. Iowa will have to play flawless to win. Go Hawkeyes!

Top Games
I was 8-5 last week, I'm 96-45 for the season.

AAC Championship Game - Temple vs. Houston: I haven't seen Temple play, but I did watch the Houston-Navy game and I was very impressed with Houston. Houston 35 Temple 27

ACC Championship Game - Clemson vs. North Carolina: Part of me wants to pick North Carolina to win this one, do they have enough defense to knock off Clemson? North Carolina 34 Clemson 31

Big Ten Championship Game - Michigan State vs. Iowa: No one is expecting Iowa to win, but I think they matchup well with Michigan State and they'll hang with them. Michigan State 21 Iowa 20

Conference USA Championship Game - Western Kentucky vs. Southern Miss: Western Kentucky is good. Western Kentucky 45 Southern Miss 31

MAC Championship Game - Bowling Green vs. Northern Illinois: This is a huge toss up game, but I think Bowling Green will pull it off. Bowling Green 34 Northern Illinois 28

Mountain West Championship Game - Air Force vs. San Diego State: San Diego State finished the regular season undefeated in conference play and I don't see them losing to Air Force. San Diego State 31 Air Force 27

Pac 12 Championship Game - Stanford vs. USC: Stanford is playing at a high level right now and I don't think USC can beat them. They'll play them tough, but Stanford will pull away. Stanford 34 USC 24

SEC Championship Game - Florida vs. Alabama: I think this one is a no-brainer. Florida has played awful the last couple of weeks and have zero offense. Alabama 27 Florida 3

Playoff Watch
Had a few teams get knocked out of the race this weekend. Here are the teams still standing.
Clemson 12-0 a win over North Carolina will solidify their spot, but North Carolina has been playing at a high level. A loss will probably knock them out.

North Carolina 11-1 will have a shot to knock off number one Clemson, if they do, will they make the playoffs?

Michigan State 11-1 knocked off Ohio State after a tough loss to Nebraska. If the Spartans beat Iowa in the conference title game, they'll be in.

Ohio State 11-1 they'll have to sit and wait to see what will happen. If Clemson and Alabama both lose, could the Buckeyes earn a spot? Would the playoffs take two Big Ten teams?

Iowa 12-0 pretty simple, win and you're in. Nobody is expecting them to win, but they'll make it a game.

Oklahoma 11-1 huge win against Oklahoma State should have the Sooners in the playoff.

Alabama 11-1 knocked off Auburn, a win over Florida will get them in.

College Football Week 13

The Iowa Hawkeyes are one of two undefeated teams left in college football. Definitely something I didn't think I would type this season. The Hawkeyes are 11-0 for the first time in school history and have a shot to make the college football playoffs. Saturday they played Purdue and got off to a quick start, up 20-0 just a minute into the second quarter. Iowa safety, Jordan Lomax, knocked out Purdue's QB, and their backup, Austin Appleby, ended up doing pretty well, bringing the score to 20-13. The Boilermakers were actually able to move the ball with him in the game. The Hawkeyes took over in the second half and won 40-20. The running game didn't do as well as they should have against a very poor Purdue run defense. Jordan Canzeri did break off a 42 yard touchdown run late. C.J. Beathard was pretty sharp throwing the ball and added three touchdowns with no interceptions. The Hawkeyes will travel to Nebraska to pound the Huskers.

In the afternoon I went to the Colorado State-New Mexico game at University Stadium in Albuquerque. The Lobos got off to a rough start throwing an interception, the Rams scored shortly after to take a 7-0 lead. The game was pretty back and forth the rest of the way. New Mexico came up short in the end, Lamar Jordan's three interceptions were too much to overcome. Had the Lobos won the turnover battle, they probably would have won the game. They fell to 6-5 on the season and close it out with a home game against division champs, Air Force.

Top Games
I was 6-3 last week, 88-40 on the season.

Iowa at Nebraska: Iowa is looking to finish the regular season undefeated with the Bugeaters standing in their way. Nebraska is 5-6, but they've had some very close losses and a huge win over Michigan State. They did lose to Purdue though. Iowa is looking to avenge last year's loss. Iowa 34 Nebraska 24

Notre Dame at Stanford: Notre Dame really struggled with Boston College and could have a really difficult time at Stanford. Christian McCaffery has been amazing lately. Stanford 31 Notre Dame 24

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State: Oklahoma is still one of the hottest teams in the country and Oklahoma State is coming off of their first loss of the season. Oklahoma 38 Oklahoma State 31

Penn State at Michigan State: If the Spartans win, they will play Iowa for the Big Ten title. Michigan State 24 Penn State 17

Florida State at Florida: Florida looked awful against FAU, but got the win in overtime. Florida State 27 Florida 21

Ohio State at Michigan: The winner of this will win the division if Penn State can upset Michigan State. Ohio State 24 Michigan 21

Baylor at TCU: TCU has lost two in a row, but almost knocked off Oklahoma without two of their best players. Baylor handed Oklahoma State their first loss of the year with a third string QB playing a majority of the snaps. This will be a high scoring game. Baylor 45 TCU 42

North Carolina at NC State: North Carolina still has an outside shot at the college football playoff, but they'll need to get a win at NC State first, which won't be easy. North Carolina 34 NC State 31

Navy at Houston: Winner will win the division. Houston was upset by UCONN last week, ending their perfect season. Navy 38 Houston 31

Ole Miss at Mississippi State: Ole Miss whooped LSU and Mississippi State won a wild game against Arkansas. Ole Miss 34 Mississippi State 28

LSU at Texas A&M: LSU has lost three in a row and A&M has been pretty solid. Fournette will need a big game if he wants to win the Heisman. Texas A&M 38 LSU 27

UCLA at USC: Winner here will get to play Stanford for the Pac 12 title. UCLA 27 USC 21

Air Force at New Mexico: If you like option teams, here are two fun ones to watch. They've combined for over 6,000 rushing yards so far this year. Air Force 38 New Mexico 28

There are only two undefeated teams left, Clemson and Iowa. Here are the teams with zero and one loss.

Clemson 11-0 this week they'll play at South Carolina, who just lost to The Citadel, and then North Carolina for the conference title.

North Carolina 10-1 only loss this year is South Carolina, which is a bad loss. This week they'll travel to NC State and then Clemson in the conference championship.

Michigan State 10-1 just knocked off Ohio State, this week they'll take on Penn State. If they win, they'll take on Iowa for the Big Ten title.

Ohio State 10-1 they'll need Penn State to win and they'll have to win at Michigan this week for a shot at the conference title.

Iowa 11-0 this week they'll play at Nebraska before playing for the conference title. If they win out, they should be in the playoff.

Baylor 9-1 just knocked off Oklahoma State. A win at TCU this week would be huge, a loss will knock them out.

Oklahoma 10-1 huge win over TCU and they'll close out with a big game at Oklahoma State. Winner could have a shot at the playoff.

Oklahoma State 10-1 lost their first game of the season, Oklahoma this week.

Florida 10-1 barely knocked off FAU, they play Florida State and Alabama. They'll lost at least one.

Alabama 10-1 takes on Auburn this week before the conference title game against Florida.

Notre Dame 10-1 closes out at Stanford.

College Football Week 12

Saturday night was one of the more amazing sports nights in my lifetime. I watched Iowa beat Minnesota with about 50 other Hawkeye fans at Spectators! What a great game! Huge win for Iowa. Shortly after that, Albuquerque's Holly Holm, pulled off a huge upset, knocking out Ronda Rousey in the second round. Less than an hour after that, as 30 point underdogs, the New Mexico Lobos beat Boise State 31-24 in Boise to become bowl eligible and gave them a shot to win their division! Not to mention, the Iowa wrestling team beat Oklahoma State 18-16 in front of 42,000 people at Kinnick Stadium earlier that morning. Such a cool event, was so much fun to watch. Sammy Brooks had a huge win, helping the Hawkeyes seal the victory!

The football game was amazing. Iowa controlled the game, but there were some moments where it seemed like Minnesota could have had a shot. LeShun Daniels had a huge game and finally looks 100%. He nearly cracked the 200 yard mark, which would have made him the third Iowa running back to do so this year. He was five yards shy. C.J. Beathard continues to impress me. He's been so banged up this year, but he keeps playing and never gives up. The defense struggled a bit with Minnesota, Mitch Leidner looks much better as a passer this year than he did last year. The defensive line really had a hard time getting any decent pass rush and LB Cole Fisher seemed out of place way too many times. Josey Jewell continues to impress though. He collected another 12 tackles, he has 27 in the last two games! The team is really missing Drew Ott right now. If Ott was healthy, I would give Iowa a shot at winning the Big Ten title game, but it's going to be too difficult without a pass rush. But, they're still 10-0 for the first time in school history and they still have a shot at that conference crown and maybe more! Playing in the Rose Bowl would be huge! Go Hawkeyes!

This Week's Top Games
Last week I was 7-3, I'm not at 82-37 for the season! Not too bad.

Michigan State at Ohio State: Huge game for the Big Ten this weekend. Michigan State hasn't looked quite as sharp this year, and Ohio State has looked really solid as of late. Ohio State 34 Michigan State 24

Baylor at Oklahoma State: I've seen Oklahoma State play once this year and that was this past weekend at Iowa State, and they did not look good at all despite scoring late and securing the victory. I don't like to judge teams based on one game though. I've seen Baylor play a few times and they'll definitely put up a lot of points. Baylor 52 Oklahoma State 45

Purdue at Iowa: Purdue has played some teams pretty tough this year, but at times they just look awful. The Hawkeyes are really playing at a high level, putting up 40 on a pretty decent Minnesota defense. Iowa 38 Purdue 17

TCU at Oklahoma: TCU barely made it past Kansas last week and Oklahoma went to Baylor and won. Oklahoma is on a mission right now. Oklahoma 42 TCU 31

Northwestern at Wisconsin: This should be a classic Big Ten matchup, the winner will probably hang around the top 25 for the rest of the season. Wisconsin 17 Northwestern 13

California at Stanford: Stanford was eliminated from playoff hopes last weekend, but they will still win the division and play for the Pac 12 title game. Stanford 31 Cal 24

USC at Oregon: This is a big game for both teams. USC has a shot to win the division and a win at Oregon will certainly help. Oregon cracked the top 25 after being absent for awhile after some tough losses. Oregon 38 USC 34

LSU at Ole Miss: Both teams are looking to get back in the win column. LSU hasn't impressed me in the games I've watched them in. If Ole Miss can play like they did against Alabama they'll win easily, but they could also play like the team that played against Florida. This one is a toss up, I'll go with the home team. Ole Miss 24 LSU 21

Colorado State at New Mexico: The Lobos are bowl eligible! Not only that, but if they win their final two games, they'll play in the Mountain West title game. I can't believe I just typed that. I'll probably actually go to this game and show some love! New Mexico 28 Colorado State 23

Also keep an eye our for Washington State's QB, Falk, if they keep winning he might move up a bit. I think Baker Mayfield needs more love nationally, he's been killing it since their loss to Texas, Oklahoma is one of the hottest teams in the country right now.

Playoff Watch

Things certainly got more interesting this week. The Pac 12's top teams, Stanford and Utah, were both knocked off and now they don't have any teams in the playoff hunt. I don't see any two loss teams making it this year. Here are the teams who, in my opinion, still have a shot.

Houston 10-0 knocked off Memphis last week to remain undefeated. They still have a tough game with Navy coming up, and the AAC title game.

Clemson 10-0 toughest remaining regular season game is at South Carolina, which should be a win. Clemson vs North Carolina for the ACC title game could be a good one.

North Carolina 9-1 they finish with two road games, at Virginia Tech and at North Carolina State, no easy wins for the Tar Heels.

Michigan State 9-1 playing at Ohio State this weekend, their playoff hopes might go out the window.

Ohio State 10-0 still have two tough games, vs Michigan State and at Michigan. Can the Buckeyes stay undefeated?

Iowa 10-0 shouldn't have a problem with Purdue this weekend, but at Nebraska could be a tough one. Nebraska is one game away from bowl eligibility.

Baylor 8-1 lost to Oklahoma last week and still have at Oklahoma State and at TCU the next couple of weeks. They probably won't survive.

Oklahoma 9-1 I think they're playing at a high level right now and they need to keep that up. They close out with TCU at home and at Oklahoma State.

TCU 9-1 finishes at Oklahoma and home against Baylor. Will any of the Big 12 teams make the playoff?

Oklahoma State 10-0 right now the Cowboys are the Big 12's best bet for the playoff and they finish with home games against Baylor and Oklahoma. Should be an interesting finish.

Florida 9-1 they'll finish with home games against FAU and Florida State before taking on Alabama for the SEC title.

Alabama 9-1 they're on a roll right now and that should continue until their matchup with Florida.

Notre Dame 9-1 Boston College usually gives Notre Dame a good game and they still have to travel to Stanford. Can the Irish finish 11-1 and make the playoff?

College Football Week 11

The Iowa Hawkeyes moved to 9-0 on the season for the second time in their history. The last time was in 2009 when they reached the Orange Bowl and knocked off Georgia Tech. As an Iowa fan, it's still hard to believe that they keep winning, especially since expectations were somewhat low for this season. Quarterback, C.J. Beathard, has a lot to do with that. He keeps doing things to win ball games, and Desmond King is having an all-american season with eight interceptions, which is tied for a school record. The Hawkeyes knocked off Indiana 35-27 on Saturday. I didn't get a chance to watch the game yet.

The New Mexico Lobos pulled off a huge upset against Utah State on Saturday, holding them to under 300 yards in a 14-13 victory. The Lobos are now one game from becoming bowl eligible!

College Football Week 10

Another week and another Iowa Hawkeye victory! They got off to a quick start and had three running backs each rush for a touchdown in the first half. Turnovers helped seal the win 31-15. Maryland's QB Perry Hills was able to run against Iowa, but he was held in check passing the ball. Miles Taylor played the best game of his young career against his home state. He recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass. He also collected eight tackles, and that dude can hit! The Hawkeye defense has been pretty incredible this year. Oklahoma State allowed 53 points against Texas Tech on Saturday, Iowa has only allowed 51 in their four conference games. C.J. Beathard was once again not 100% and I doubt he will be for awhile. He missed on some throws, but had a couple of nice ones. Tight End George Kittle had a huge one handed grab early in the game which sparked some momentum. Desmond King sealed the deal with an 88 yard interception return for a touchdown, his seventh interception of the season. He's one away from tying the school record, which is held by Lou King and Nile Kinnick.

The Hawkeyes travel to Bloomington, Indiana, this weekend to take on Indiana. The Hoosiers have a solid offense, led by QB Nate Sudfeld, but they're defense is awful. I think Iowa will win by a couple of touchdowns.

There were some crazy finishes on Saturday. Miami used eight laterals on a kickoff to knock off Duke on the road, although the play should have been called dead when one of the players' knees hit the ground. That game knocked Duke out of the playoff race. They still have a shot at the division if they can knock off North Carolina this weekend.

New Mexico State finally won a game, and it came on the final play of the game. Leading by seven in overtime, an Aggie defensive player intercepted a pass with his feet to seal the win.

Games of the Week
I was 8-2 last week, I'm 67-31 for the season now. Pretty solid slate of games this week.

Navy at Memphis: Navy's lone loss is to Notre Dame, they have a solid team. Memphis looks really good though. Memphis 45 Navy 28

Florida State at Clemson: Huge game for both teams, Florida State looked pretty sharp against Syracuse and Clemson continues to roll. Clemson 34 Florida State 28

Duke at North Carolina: Duke got hosed against Miami, did it suck the life out of them? North Carolina is quietly 7-1. North Carolina 28 Duke 24

Notre Dame at Pittsburgh: This should be a great game, I think the Irish pull it off. Notre Dame 31 Pittsburgh 27

Iowa at Indiana: Indiana always seems to give good Iowa teams a hard time, this one might not be too much different, but I think the Hawkeyes will pull away. Iowa 38 Indiana 24

Penn State at Northwestern: Only four losses between the two teams, this is going to be a defensive slugfest. Northwestern 17 Penn State 14

TCU at Oklahoma State: This is a tough game to predict, TCU has had a couple of close games against weaker opponents and Oklahoma State just keeps winning. Can they pull the upset this week? TCU 45 Oklahoma State 42

Utah State at New Mexico: The Lobos return to action after a bye week last week. I don't think they have enough talent to hang with Utah State. Utah State 34 New Mexico 23

California at Oregon: Both teams are sitting at 5-3 and their schedules aren't getting any easier. They both really need a win right now. Oregon 42 California 34

Utah at Washington: This could be a tough game for the Utes, but I think they'll pull it off. Utah 24 Washington 21

LSU at Alabama: The game of the week, winner will have the lead in the toughest division in college football. Alabama 27 LSU 24
