Looking like a solid class thus far, and the Lobos will have a lot of talent coming back next year. We'll see if David can push the Lobos over the hump and pick up a bowl game birth. Here's something that blew my mind, while Locksley was coach, an "offensive coach" mind you, the Lobos had eight games where they scored 20 points or more in a game, and that was in 2 and half seasons. This year under Davie, a "defensive coach" the Lobos scored 20 or more in eight games.

Iowa Hawkeyes 2012 Recap, Look Ahead to 2013

The Iowa Hawkeyes ended their 2012 football season yesterday with a 13-7 loss to division champion, Nebraska. I was expecting the Hawkeyes to lose by at least three touchdowns, but the defense kept them in the game, unfortunately, like most of the season, the offense didn't come through. Some very questionable play-calling cost Iowa the game in my opinion. I know the wind played a huge factor in the game, but that's no excuse for horrible play-calling. You're already 4-7 and have a chance to upset a ranked opponent on senior day, take a fuckin' chance! I'm a huge Kirk Ferentz fan, but I really am tired of this conservative play on offense, it's ridiculous. You're on national tv, run some trick plays here or there. I watched the Iowa State-West Virginia game after the Iowa-Nebraska game, and it was refreshing to see a coach take chances. Coach Rhoads had a freshmen QB in the game, the 3rd QB that they've played this year. Playing in only his second game, and he ended up with the same amount of touchdowns as James Vandenberg, who threw 389 passes this year!

Looking at the numbers, Vandenberg threw 7 touchdowns this year, which means Iowa had 7 td's through the air, because no one else even took a snap. As for running the ball, Vandy did have 4 rushing touchdowns, Mark Weisman had 8, Damon Bullock with 3. If my math is correct, that's 15 rushing touchdowns. For a grand total of 22 offensive touchdowns in 12 games. As I type this, there are about 6 or 7 players in the country that will score more touchdowns than the Iowa team this entire year, that's not acceptable for a team with a veteran coach like Ferentz. Looking back at the games, if Iowa could have scored one more touchdown each game, they would have beat Iowa State, Central Michigan, Indiana, Purdue and Nebraska, and right now they would be 5-3 9-3 and playing for a pretty good bowl game. Instead, they'll be spending the holidays in Iowa.

The quarterback position was a huge disappointment. Vandenberg's 4th quarter performance against Pittsburgh last year excited a lot of fans for his potential, but he never really lived up to that. Losing Marvin McNutt was a huge loss and several dropped passes certainly hurt his numbers, but he looked scared most of the season, you can't have a scared QB. Looking ahead to 2013 there isn't a single QB on the roster that has taken a snap at the D-1 level. Cody Sokol got some experience in junior college, but Jake Rudock and C.J. Beathard should challenge for the job.

The running back spot, always hit with injuries, no exception this season. It started with projected starter, Jordan Canzeri, in spring ball, which he never came from and took a reshirt. Incoming freshmen, Barkley Hill was injured in practice and missed the season. He just got popped for OWI, so he should be suspended for a game or two next season. Damon Bullock stepped up and had a nice season as the starter until he got knocked out, he ended up with over 500 yards on the ground and has two years left. Walk-on backup fullback, Mark Weisman, provided a nice tough running game when Bullock went down, he racked up 837 yards and 8 touchdowns, including a 217-yard effort. He's a tough runner that can wear a defense down, just like he did against Michigan State early in the season. Highly touted freshmen Greg Garmon came on pretty strong late in the year after struggling and injury early. He ended with 122 yards. Looking ahead to next year, Canzeri, Bullock, Weisman, Hill and Garmon will all be back, which leaves Iowa with a pretty deep backfield. Should be a strong point for next season and 2014.

Brad Rogers was injured much of the season, which led to Jon Gimm playing a lot of fullback, and Gimm did a pretty nice job. Hopefully Rogers will be 100% next year, he's a great blocker. If not, Weisman could definitely shift back over, and Jacob Reisen could play some.

The WR's were bad this year. I thought Keenan Davis would have a break-out season, but he disappeared the last couple weeks and never really stood out. Some of the younger guys showed some promise, but there were so many drops this year. Next year the group should be deep, but there's no one who's going to give other defensive coordinators nightmares. Kevonte Martin-Manley will start, but after that it could be a toss up. I'd like to see Jordan Cotton get a shot, he was a great return man this year. Young guys like Tevaun Smith and Jacob Hillyer will have to step up.

CJ Feidorowitz, sorry I can't spell his name, had a huge end to 2012, making some nice plays the last few weeks. The TE position wasn't used much until late in the season which with really puzzled me. If CJ is back the TE spot will be a strong point for the team next year. Henry Krieger-Coble, Ray Hamilton and Jake Duzey will all be solid backups.

The OL took a hit in the Penn State game, which was rough, losing Brandon Scherff and Andrew Donnal were big shots to the offense. James Ferentz and Matt Tobin played really well yesterday against Nebraska in their final games, Ferentz will be the biggest loss on the OL for next year. Not sure who will take over at the center position. Juco transfer, Eric Simmons, could step up. Scherff will be back at LT, with Donnal at LG, Austin Blythe at RG and Brett Van Sloten at RT. A pretty young group, but a lot of experience, should be one of the better lines in the conference. The line in 2014 could be really good if everyone sticks around and stays healthy. Connor Boffeli could factor in next year as well.

The defensive line was a huge question mark when the season started this year, but they played pretty tough all year. They weren't great, but they held their own at times, and looked really good yesterday even without Joe Gaglione. Gaglione and Bigach will both be gone, but Dom Alvis, Louis Trinca-Pasat and Darian Cooper should start, and all three should be pretty solid. Someone will have to step up at DE, maybe Drew Ott, or possibly Faith Ekakitie after a redshirt season. Should be better next season.

The LB corp was solid, Anthony Hitchens, James Morris, and Christian Kirksey, were the top 3 in tackles with 124, 113, and 95 respectively, they will be seniors next year. They will be much better next season, they could all use a little work. Kirksey was a big play-maker. As for backups, they have Cole Fisher, Travis Perry and Quinton Alston who were mostly special team players this year.

The defensive backs struggled with tackling and didn't force many turnovers this year. Micah Hyde, the senior CB didn't play up to his potential, but he will be missed. Tanner Miller missed a lot of tackles and Nico Law, who started much of the second half, needs to work on angles, but he should be pretty good after the experience he got this year. Iowa has a lot of CB's, but they're very young, BJ Lowery will be a starter, but there will be a big competition for the other starting spot between Jordan Lomax, Sean Draper, Kevin Buford and Maurice Fleming. Miller and Law will be back at the safety spots, but they don't have much depth. Hopefully, recruit, Delano Hill will stick with Iowa, he could get a lot of PT next year.

Mike Meyer is a solid kicker and he'll be back next year. He's been huge for Iowa. at punter, Connor Kornbrath will return after averaging about 38 yards per punt, not the greatest punter, but he'll get better.

So, overall, it was a tough season, but I'm trying to stay positive. I like coach Ferentz, but I think they need a new offensive coordinator, someone who's not afraid to mix it up a bit. They were way too predictable this year, and if I can predict the plays they're going to call, I'm positive that Big 10 defensive coordinators can figure it out. Lets change it up Hawkeyes! Get a young OC that wants to make a name for himself.

Next year's schedule isn't very favorable, and they won't be able to run that vanilla offense if they want to make a bowl game. I'm picking 5-7 if Greg Davis is OC, and that's being nice. Go Hawkeyes!

Top Games of the Week
Florida at Florida State: Huge non-conference game featuring two top ten teams in the country, both with only one loss. Should be a great game, Florida is playing for a BCS birth, Florida State can lose and still get a BCS birth by knocking off Georgia Tech. Both teams will be ready to play. Florida State 31 Florida 27

South Carolina at Clemson: South Carolina has lost some of its hype since Lattimore went down with injury. Clemson is hoping to prove everyone that they're underrated. Both teams are hoping for a BCS shot, South Carolina is a long shot, if Clemson wins, they should get in. Clemson 38 South Carolina 28

Notre Dame at USC: Can't believe Notre Dame has done it, there's been so many close games this year for them. I thought USC could pull the upset, but not without Matt Barkley, USC's disappointing season ends with a loss. Notre Dame 24 USC 14

Nebraska at Iowa: Two reasons why this game is on here, because Iowa is my team, and because Nebraska needs a win to clinch the division. If Nebraska loses and Michigan wins, then Michigan will take the division. It's senior day at Kinnick Stadium, so hopefully they'll play some inspired football. It's hard to believe that it's the final game of the year for the Hawkeyes. I just don't think there's enough talent on the roster to pull the upset. Nebraska 38 Iowa 17

Michigan at Ohio State: Iowa was able to knock Touisant out of Michigan's lineup, but Denard Robinson did pretty well at RB and WR. Can Ohio State finish the year undefeated? This should be an exciting one. Ohio State 31 Michigan 27

Wisconsin at Penn State: Wisconsin has already clinched the division, but close out with the Nittany Lions, who shocked everyone this year by having a solid year. Montee Ball was off to a slow start this year, as was the entire team, but they've been decent in conference play. Can they win on the road though at Penn State? Going to be a tough test before the conference title game. Wisconsin 28 Penn State 24

Mississippi State at Ole Miss: Ole Miss needs a win to get a bowl game, they've looked pretty sharp this year, but had a brutal schedule. Mississippi State was off to a hot start until they had to take on the Alabama, LSU and A&M. Mississippi State wins 38-27

Oregon at Oregon State: Well, the mighty Ducks fell at home to Stanford last week. Stanford was somehow able to slow the best offense in the country down. Can the Beavers do the same? This is a huge game for both teams. Oregon 45 Oregon State 28

Stanford at UCLA: Another huge Pac-12 game, and possibly a preview of the conference title game. UCLA has been on a roll, and Stanford just knocked off Oregon. This could be fun game to watch. UCLA 24 Stanford 20

Oklahoma State at Oklahoma: Another in-state rivalry game here, Oklahoma still has a shot at a BCS game if Kansas State loses to Texas next week, the Sooners could sneak up and win the conference. Ok State has been pretty good though. I give this one to the Sooners at home. Oklahoma 42 Oklahoma State 31

Heisman
Right now it belongs to Fr QB Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, he's thrown for over 3,000 yards, he's only thrown 21 td's, but he's ran for 17 more, including over 1,100 yards on the ground! Over 4,000 yards and 38 touchdowns as a freshmen against the SEC, not too bad. In my opinion, no one is even close to him right now. Manti Te'o at Notre Dame has had an amazing year, Collin Klein hasn't been bad, Marqise Lee has huge numbers, Braxton Miller, Aaron Murray, AJ McCarron, Tajh Boyd, Geno Smith, all have solid numbers, but Manziel is the man right now, most of those other guys have a great supporting cast, A&M doesn't really have anyone that stands out besides Manziel.

2013 Iowa Hawkeye football recruiting

I've been trying to keep track of the recruits during their senior seasons. Not a bad class, they did lose DE David Kenney to Indiana. They hired his dad, so not a big shock there.

Davidson at New Mexico

Last night I went to the Midnight Madness at The Pit, featuring Davidson and New Mexico! It had been awhile since I'd been to The Pit, I love that place! If you ever get a chance to see a basketball game there, check it out! I hadn't been to a game since Steve Alford's first game as head coach when they dominated Eastern Washington in an exhibition game. As an Iowa fan, it's kind of weird to be rooting for Steve Alford, since he wasn't the greatest coach at Iowa. He did win a conference title, and had a 26-5 record one year, but made some decisions that didn't rub everyone the right way. I think he's a great fit for the Lobos, he looks better in red anyway.

Back to The Pit, amazing atmosphere. The place was pretty packed for a midnight tip-off, and loud as always. Davidson came in ready to play. They return most of their team from last year, a team that made the NCAA tourney and won a conference title.

The game got off to a rough start for the Lobos, they spotted the Wildcats a 10 point lead. New Mexico tried chipping away, but couldn't seem to get within single digits. They were hitting their free throws luckily or it could have gotten really ugly. Davidson was hitting three's and rebounding on defense and offense. The Lobos offense looked sloppy and were struggling to get off decent shots. They took a lot of off balance shots. Davidson's lead got up to 16 if I remember correctly. The Lobos pulled within 8 late in the first half, but the Wildcats drilled two threes and took a 14 point lead into halftime.

The second half was a different story. The Lobos came out with some attitude and stepped up their game. They forced Davidson to miss their three's and seemed to grab a lot more boards. A few of the Davidson players got into some foul trouble as well, which helped the Lobo offense. Tony Snell took charge in the second half, he blocked a huge three point attempt late in the game and pushed the ball ahead to Kendall Williams for a two-handed dunk which ignited the crowd. Snell drilled a three with about a minute left which pretty much sealed the deal for the Lobos, capping a huge comeback.

I'll try to do a rundown on all of the players that played.
Cameron Bairstow 6'9" Jr Had a decent game, had a nice dunk and knocked down 7-8 FT Needs to add more strength to be more of a force down low.

Demetrius Walker 6'2" Jr Hit 2 huge 3's in the game that sparked the comeback, but other than that didn't do much. He's a beast, looks more like a football player, but he makes everyone nervous when he's dribbling, kind of a sloppy ball handler. I could see him turning the ball over a lot.

Kendall Williams 6'4" Jr Had a pretty solid game overall with 6 boards, 7 assists and hit 13-14 free throws which were huge. His dunk near the end of the game was huge, solid game for Kendall.

Tony Snell 6'7" Jr Tony was the man, created his own shots, he ended up on the floor a lot. Loved his hustle, definitely a guy you want on your team when the game is on the line. Hit 9-10 FT, 25 points and a huge three with a minute left.

Hugh Greenwood 6'3" So This guy might be my favorite guy on the team, he's a solid defender, great ball handler, too. Got called for some BS fouls, so he didn't get as many minutes as he should have. Not a huge scoring threat last night, but a great rebounder for a PG, also hit 5-6 FT. I believe he held #12 scoreless also.

Chad Adams 6'6" Sr Hard to believe Adams is a SR already. He was pretty insignificant in his minutes early in the game, didn't do anything memorable.

Alex Kirk 7'0" So Kirk is a monster out there! Definitely the bench player of the game, had a nice second half. He can shoot for a big guy, he knocked down some nice outside shots, also had a huge dunk later in the game. Ended with 14 points and 7 boards.

Nick Banyard 6'8" Fr I remember seeing Banyard out there and he looked pretty good, grabbed 6 rebounds in 12 minutes! Could be a nice addition to the team, and he has good size.

Cleveland Thomas 6'3" Fr Don't remember Thomas doing anything huge in the game.

I was pretty impressed with the Lobos. I think they could add Kirk to the starting lineup replacing Walker.

G-Greenwood
G-Williams
G-Snell
F-Bairstow
C-Kirk

And the great thing about that lineup, they'll all be back next year hopefully! It's gonna be a fun season in Albuquerque.

New Top 25

Well, it's been a super disappointing season for my Iowa Hawkeyes. A brutal road loss at Indiana has me wondering if they'll even make a bowl game this year. They need to win two, this week they play Purdue at home, on the road at Michigan, then home against Nebraska. It's not looking promising. They have been good against Michigan the past few years, but I don't see them beating them this year. Nebraska is too good this year, too. Purdue is beatable, but who knows. The offense has been in a weird funk all season long and can't seem to get anything consistent. At times Vandenberg looks like a solid QB, but not as often as he should. Damon Bullock has been a solid running back this year, he and Mark Weisman are two bright spots on offense. Two OL were knocked out of the Penn State game for the remainder of the year, and fullback Brad Rogers has been out, not a lot of solid blocking. At least, they're getting some young guys some experience. Next year's OL should be pretty solid.

The defense has been shaky in conference play since the Michigan State game. The DL has been better than I thought they would be though, a lot of youngsters getting valuable playing time. The linebacking crew is one of the top ones in the conference and all three starters are juniors. The defensive backfield will lose Micah Hyde next year, but should be good.

I'm hoping Iowa can pull off an upset so they can make a bowl game, they definitely need the extra practices. At least, the bball season starts soon! The Hawkeyes should be pretty decent and might get a chance to dance! I'm going to the New Mexico-Davidson game on Monday night at the Pit, which is a nice little 15 minute walk from my house. Well, here's my top 25 for the week, kind of late, but here it is. Florida State is leading Va Tech right now in a pretty close game.

1 Alabama 9-0
2 Oregon 9-0
3 Kansas State 9-0
4 Notre Dame 9-0
5 Ohio State 10-0
6 Georgia 8-1
7 Florida State 8-1
8 Florida 8-1
9 Louisville 9-0
10 Clemson 8-1
11 LSU 7-2
12 Oregon State 7-1
13 South Carolina 7-2
14 Oklahoma 6-2
15 Texas A&M 7-2
16 Nebraska 7-2
17 Texas 7-2
18 UCLA 7-2
19 Stanford 7-2
20 Louisiana Tech 8-1
21 Toledo 8-1
22 Mississippi State 7-2
23 Northwestern 7-2
24 Rutgers 7-1
25 Utah State 8-2

Top Games
Florida State at Va Tech: Too late to give a prediction, but I do think FSU pulls it off.

Penn State at Nebraska: Nebraska is rolling right now, PSU has been a surprise this year. Nebraska 28 Penn State 21

Northwestern at Michigan: Both teams still in contention for the division race. This could be a really good game. Michigan 31 Northwestern 24

Wisconsin at Indiana: The winner of this one is going to the title game. Seriously. Indiana has looked pretty sharp this year, playing some close games. Can they knock off Wisconsin though? Wisconsin 42 Indiana 28

Kansas State at TCU: TCU is always tough to predict, Kansas State keeps cruising along. Kansas State 45 TCU 38

Oregon State at Stanford: Oregon State needs a win to try to keep up with Oregon, don't think it will happen though. Stanford 28 Oregon State 21

Mississippi State at LSU: Mississippi State started off hot, but had somewhat of a weak schedule. Third straight tough opponent. LSU almost had Alabama last week, I thought they would beat them. LSU 28 Miss St 17

Texas A&M at Alabama: This could be a great game if Texas A&M brings it. If not, Alabama rolls. Alabama 38 Texas A&M 28

West Virginia at Oklahoma State: Remember when Geno Smith was the only Heisman candidate? Oklahoma State 42 West Virginia 38

Arizona State at USC: It's awesome watching USC lose when they have such a talented team and can actually go to a bowl game. I think they win this week though. USC 42 Arizona State 31

Purdue at Iowa: Have to make a prediction on this one. Not sure what Kirk Herbstreit was smoking when he predicted Purdue to win their division, they haven't even won a conference game. Iowa 31 Purdue 21

CFB November!

November is here, which means the conference races and BCS standings will be heating up! Last week I was 8-2 on my predictions, not bad! Missed the Okla-ND game and another one that I can't remember right now. Not the Iowa game, I predicted them to lose and I was correct. They're having a rough season right now, 4-4 and 2-2 in conference. If they can't win at Indiana this weekend they might not make a bowl game. As for New Mexico, they're having a solid year! 4-5 right now, but could have been 5-4 had their top 2 QB's not been knocked out against Fresno State. The Lobos had a 21-0 advantage in the second quarter, but couldn't stop Fresno in the second half, and the offense struggled to keep up. Still, a solid year thus far.

Here's my new top 25 for the week
1-ALABAMA 8-0 AT LSU
2-KANSAS STATE 8-0 VS OK STATE
3-OREGON 8-0 AT USC
4-NOTRE DAME 8-0 VS PITTSBURGH

23-OKLAHOMA STATE 5-2 AT KANSAS STATE
24-WEST VIRGINIA 5-2 VS TCU
25-UCLA 6-2 VS ARIZONA

Top Games of the Week
Texas A&M at Mississippi State: This game won't have any outcome in the SEC championship, but could determine who plays in a better bowl game. A&M 38 Miss St 28

TCU at West Virginia: Both teams need a win right now, probably not much defense will be played in this one. West Virginia 56 TCU 42

Texas at Texas Tech: Always a fun game to watch, both teams are 6-2 and have an outside shot at an at-large BCS bid. Tech 38 Texas 34

Nebraska at Michigan State: Winning on the road in the Big 10 is tough, Michigan State hasn't been the best team, but they have some momentum after knocking off Wisconsin. Michigan State 21 Nebraska 17

Iowa at Indiana: Iowa has been a huge disappointment this year, they need a win in Bloomington this week, I think they'll bounce back. Indiana's run defense is awful. Iowa 31 Indiana 27

Oregon at USC: I thought USC was going to have a shot at the title this year, but they always seem to lose one or two. Oregon 45 USC 35

Clemson at Duke: Duke tries to stay in contention, but Clemson is too tough. Clemson 42 Duke 17

Alabama at LSU: Everyone says Alabama is the team to beat, I think LSU can beat them, along with every NFL team. LSU 17 Alabama 14

Oklahoma State at Kansas State: Ok State is on a roll right now, but so is K State. Kansas State 38 Oklahoma State 28

Arizona at UCLA: Both teams are playing well right now, UCLA should win at home. UCLA 42 Arizona 31

25-West Virginia 5-2

Top Games of the Week
Cincinnat @ Louisville: crucial game in the conference, would have been a matchup of unbeaten teams had Cincy won last week. Louisville 42 Cincinnati 31

Iowa @ Northwestern: this isn't a big game to anyone else except for me. The Hawkeyes are technically still in the running for the division title, but got smashed by Penn State last week. Northwestern had a heart-breaking loss to Nebraska, which team will bounce back? Northwestern 34 Iowa 24

Florida vs Georgia: another big conference game, Florida has been on a roll, Georgia had a rough loss to South Carolina just weeks ago. I like Georgia to pull the upset. Georgia 28 Florida 21

Texas Tech @ Kansas State: I'm still a little shocked that Tech is in the top 15, I didn't think they would be that great this year. K State is one of the best teams in the country. Kansas State 49 Texas Tech 38

Duke @ Florida State: This could be the ACC title game this year, believe it or not. Duke has looked good, probably because they have Hud Mullencamp on the team. Florida State 31 Duke 27

Michigan State @ Wisconsin: Well, Michigan State needs to win a game pretty bad, they've lost to Iowa and Michigan the last two weeks and have eliminated themselves from contention. Wisconsin is playing pretty well and they have a clear path to the conference title game. Wisconsin 27 Michigan State 14

Notre Dame @ Oklahoma: What a great game here in the middle of the season for both teams, winner is going to look pretty good for a BCS bowl game. The Irish have had a couple close calls this year, but they look good. Oklahoma has been tough since their loss to K State. Oklahoma 27 Notre Dame 21

Michigan @ Nebraska: Big division game here, both teams came up with late-minute wins a week ago. If Rex Burkhead was 100% I would pick Nebraska with ease, but this is a tough one, I think they can still win since they're at home. Nebraska 17 Michigan 14

Mississippi State @ Alabama: A battle of undefeated teams, Mississippi State is getting no love this year. Alabama is everyone's clear cut number one, and I'm guessing only Mississippi State and their fans think they have a shot in this one. Alabama 38 Mississippi State 21

Oregon State @ Washington: Washington is a good team, but they're having a hard time winning games. Oregon State comes in undefeated, but Washington has already upset one team this year. Washington 28 Oregon State 24 *upset of the week

I was 7-4 a week ago

Conferences
ACC: Florida State looks like the front runner, especially with a victory already against Clemson. The other division isn’t as easy to figure out, Duke, Miami and Virginia Tech will be the teams in the running, I think Va Tech will win it, but don’t count Duke out. Va Tech beat them in the head-to-head, which may help them clinch.

Big East: There’s a 3-way race for the top spot between, Louisville, Rutgers, and Cincinnati, and they all still have to play each other. It could be anyone’s ball game, but I like Louisville to win the conference, but I don’t think they’ll go undefeated.

SEC: I think Georgia might be able to sneak up on Florida and take the division, and I could see LSU knocking off Alabama at home, too, to set up LSU vs Georgia in the championship. I think LSU would win and get into a national title game, while Alabama also gets a BCS after going onedefeated. (Is that coined yet?)

Big 10: Conference has been somewhat of a mess, but there’s some damn good football games being played. The finishes of the Neb-NW, MIch-MSU, and OSU-Purd games this week were insane! Wisconsin is the obvious choice for the championship game, but who will they play? Should come down to Michigan or Nebraska, I’m going to take Michigan, with Michigan taking down Wisconsin and going to the Rose Bowl. Penn State is one of the hottest teams in the country right now, but of course, they’re not bowl eligible.

Big 12: West Virginia is right in the middle of the pack now, after cracking the top 10 for much of the season. Kansas State has a pretty favorable schedule and could go unbeaten with Oklahoma right behind them. I’ve got Kansas State winning all their games and taking on LSU in the title game right now, with Oklahoma earning a BCS birth.

Pac 12: The Oregon teams are both unbeaten, one of them will most likely take on USC for the conference title. I think USC will win it and Oregon will make a BCS, too.

Non BCS: The only non-bcs team that might get a shot at a BCS game is Notre Dame, they’re undefeated right now, but I think they lose to Oklahoma and USC, and I don’t know if 10-2 would be good enough to get them in. If they were in the Big East, they’d be in for sure. Boise State could sneak up in there, but I don’t think they’re schedule strength is that great, and they haven’t beaten anyone that great. Ohio is undefeated, but I could see them losing at Kent State and to Toledo or Northern Illinois in the conference title game, could be interesting though.

College Football

Great day of football yesterday! Especially watching Iowa knock off Michigan State on the road. I hate Michigan State, so that made it that much better. It still boggles me how a team can lose at home to Central Michigan then a few weeks later win at Michigan State.

Also, congrats to the New Mexico Lobos on their win over Hawaii late last night. Bob Davie has the Lobos at 4-3, bowl game?

Here were my predictions from yesterday, I did pretty well
Alabama 38 Missouri 14
LSU 21 South Carolina 17
Mississippi State 31 Tennessee 28
Texas A&M 38 Louisiana Tech 28
Kansas State 31 Iowa State 24
Oklahoma 38 Texas 28
Baylor 35 TCU 24
Wisconsin 31 Purdue 21
Oregon State 17 BYU 10
USC 38 Washington 28
Notre Dame 35 Stanford 24
Fresno State 34 Boise 24 *upset of the week

Wasn't expecting Texas Tech to knock off West Virginia, that was a whoopin! Makes the Heisman race a little more interesting, I think Braxton Miller and Collin Klein definitely moved up.

Here's my new top 25 for the week as well as my predictions for next weekends top games (undefeated teams in bold)
1-Alabama
2-Florida
3-Oregon
4-Notre Dame
5-Kansas State
6-Ohio State
7-LSU
8-South Carolina
9-Oregon State
10-Oklahoma

Predictions for next week
Oregon @ Arizona State: Both teams can put up points pretty easily, should be a high scoring game. Oregon 52 Arizona State 38

Texas Tech @ TCU: Texas Tech shocked me with a huge win over West Virginia, TCU came up with a big win after a tough loss to Iowa State. Texas Tech 42 TCU 35

LSU @ Texas A&M: LSU has a solid defense, can they shut down A&M? LSU 31 Texas A&M 24

Virginia Tech @ Clemson: Va Tech came back and beat Duke yesterday to try to keep pace for a division title. Clemson looks solid with QB Tajh Boyd. Clemson 38 Va Tech 27

Rutgers @ Temple: Rutgers is unbeaten but travel to take on a tough Temple team. Temple 28 Rutgers 21 *upset of the week

South Carolina @ Florida: Florida has been playing really well lately, South Carolina had a tough road loss at LSU and now have to travel to Florida. Florida 21 South Carolina 14

Nebraska @ Northwestern: Big game for both teams, loser slips in the division and will have a tougher climb. Nebraska got rocked at OSU in their last game, Northwestern is always a pesky team, should be a great game. Northwestern 34 Nebraska 27

Kansas State @ West Virginia: This game would have been game of the week had the Mountaineers not lost to Texas Tech. K State had to hold off Iowa State to win on the road. West Virginia 38 Kansas State 31

Cincinnati @ Toledo: Cincinnati is another undefeated team playing a tough opponent on the road this week. Toledo is on a roll right now. Toledo 34 Cincinnati 28

Florida State @ Miami: Miami had a tough loss against North Carolina yesterday, the Seminoles killed Boston College. I think they can carry the momentum over, Miami has struggled in big games. Florida State 38 Miami 17

Penn State @ Iowa: Iowa won at Michigan State and is tied with Michigan for the lead in the division. Penn State has been great since they lost their first two this year. Iowa always plays well against Penn State and I think home field advantage helps. Iowa 21 Penn State 13

Predictions

It's half way through the year, lets take a look at the season conference by conference.

ACC: None of the teams are undefeated, Florida State and Clemson both with one loss as of now. Duke also with only one loss, but I see them falling in conference play.
Championship: Florida State vs Miami
Bowl eligible teams: Florida State-BCS, Clemson, NC State, Miami, Virginia Tech

Big East: There are three unbeaten teams as of now, but they all have to play each other at some point. They might also be the only three teams that end up bowl eligible.
Bowl eligible teams: Louisville-BCS, Cincinnati, Rutgers

Big 10: Ohio State is undefeated, but they're not eligible for post season play. Rose Bowl is up for grabs this year.
Championship: Michigan vs Wisconsin
Bowl eligible teams: Michigan, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Iowa, Purdue

Big 12: Kansas State and West Virginia are both looking solid, they'll play next weekend in a huge game.
Bowl eligible teams: Oklahoma-BCS, West Virginia, Kansas State, Texas, Iowa State, Texas Tech, Baylor

SEC: Alabama is the team to beat right now and I don't see anyone doing it.
Championship: Alabama vs Georgia
Bowl eligible teams: Alabama-BCS, Georgia, Florida, LSU, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Missouri

Pac 12: Oregon and Oregon State are both undefeated and USC can get back in the title picture if they can win out, which I think they can.
Championship: Oregon vs USC
Bowl eligible teams: Oregon-BCS, USC, Oregon State, Stanford, Arizona State, Washington, UCLA, Utah

I think Notre Dame will finish 10-2

Here's my guess at the BCS teams
Alabama, Florida State, Oregon, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Louisville, USC, Notre Dame, LSU, Michigan

Oregon vs Alabama in the title game with Alabama winning

Heisman

I was going to put together a top 10 list or even a top 5, but I'm just going to go with a top 1.

Geno Smith QB West Virginia

He's the clear front-runner right now, I don't see anyone else even near where he's at right now. There's still a lot of football to play, Braxton Miller and Collin Klein could slide up there if they play well enough.

New Top 25, Top Games of the Week

It's certainly been a strange year in college football with Arkansas' free fall from the top 10 and not looking good for the remainder of the year, the Big Ten has been awful, Iowa walk-on fullback, Mark Weisman, is ranked in the top 20 in the nation in rushing, including a 217 yard effort in a stunning loss to Central Michigan. Well, here's my top 25 for this week.

1-Alabama
2-Florida State
3-Oregon
4-Geogia
5-LSU
6-South Carolina
7-Kansas State
8-Notre Dame
9-West Virginia
10-Florida

22-UCLA
23-Nebraska
24-Cincinnati
25-Texas A&M
Teams missing the cut: Miami, Texas Tech, Rutgers, Northwestern, Baylor, Ohio, Boise State, Arizona State, La Tech

Top Games Saturday

Northwestern at Penn State: Both teams are hot right now, Northwestern undefeated, the Lions have won three in a row. I'm rooting for the Lions in this one, I think they'll pull off a close one. PSU 24 NW 21

Virginia Tech at North Carolina: Va Tech is down right now and they're facing a tough Tar Heels team on the road, but for some reason I think the Hokies get back on track. VT 34 UNC 24

Arizona at Stanford: Stanford was upset last week and should bounce back to beat a pretty solid Arizona squad. Stanford 35 Arizona 27

LSU at Florida: LSU hasn't been that impressive in their victories, but neither has Florida. This is going to be a great game, maybe better than the Georgia-S. Carolina game. LSU 17 Florida 13

Oklahoma at Texas Tech: Oklahoma was one of my favorites to win a national title this year, they travel to Lubbock to take on the undefeated Red Raiders, who have been decent. Oklahoma 42 Tech 28

Georgia at South Carolina: I like both of these teams this year, Georgia has a nice balanced attack on offense that everyone thought would be one-dimensional this year, the Gamecocks have the best running back in the nation not named Mark Weisman, Marcus Lattimore. This is going to be a good one. Georgia pulls it off 35-28

West Virginia at Texas: Geno Smith is everyone's favorite for the Heisman right now it seems after his video game numbers last week against Baylor. They're getting into the meat of their schedule now though. Texas is a pretty tough team this year, should be a good high-scoring game. West Virginia 49 Texas 38

Miami at Notre Dame: When Miami got stomped by K State I kind of ruled them out, but they've bounced back. The Irish have looked tough this year, this should be a good one. Notre Dame 27 Miami 21

Nebraska at Ohio State: Last year's game will be tough to beat, amazing performance by Rex Burkhead in the second half. Both teams coming off big conference wins. Ohio State gets revenge from last year 24-17

Washington at Oregon: Washington pulled off the upset of Stanford last week, but Oregon is too tough for them. Oregon 45 Washington 24

Should be some solid close games this weekend. Alabama will sit and watch and see if anyone can close the gap at all for the number one spot, my guess is no.

Fletcher's Top 25 After Week 1

I didn't get to see any action Saturday with my school and work obligations, but I did get to follow the Iowa game on the gametracker. When they were down 17-9 to Northern Illinois I wasn't too worried after what Iowa did in the 4th quarter last year against Pittsburgh. Iowa's offense wasn't anything special, but sophomore running back, Damon Bullock, stepped up and had a huge game in his first start, going for 150 yards and a game-winning touchdown! Iowa prevailed 18-17, and I think the close win will give the team an edge as opposed to a blowout victory.

This week is the Iowa State game, which will be played in Iowa City at historic Kinnick Stadium, which usually bodes well for the Hawkeyes. The Cyclones played well in week 1 knocking off Tulsa. Saturday's game will be a hard fought battle, I think the Hawkeyes will pull it off in another close one.

Here's my top 25 after watching some highlights and reading some recaps of the first week.

1-Alabama
2-USC
3-LSU
4-Oregon
5-Florida State
6-Arkansas
7-South Carolina
8-Oklahoma
9-Michigan State
10-Georgia
11-West Virginia
12-Clemson
13-Ohio State
14-Nebraska
15-Oklahoma State
16-TCU
17-Texas
18-Michigan
19-Wisconsin
20-Virginia Tech
21-Kansas State
22-Louisville
23-Missouri
24-Florida
25-Notre Dame

Top games of week 2

UCF at Ohio State: Both teams looked great in their openers. UCF could be one of the top non BCS teams this season. Ohio State is playing with a postseason ban. Urban Meyer is one of the best coaches in the game, I think OSU wins by double digits.

Miami FL at Kansas State: Miami looked pretty good against BC and K State started very strong. K State has a pretty dynamic offense this year. K State wins a close one.

Florida at Texas A&M: Florida looked sluggish against Bowling Green, and A&M's opener was postponed due to the hurricane. Florida will have to step up if they want to welcome the Aggies to the SEC properly. A&M pulls it off.

Wisconsin at Oregon State: Wisconsin struggled against Northern Iowa, which was surprising since UNI lost some great players from a year ago. Wisconsin did as well, plus a few coaches. But, Montee Ball returns after scoring a million touchdowns last year, but UNI held him pretty good. This will be a great test for Wisconsin to see if they'll be a legit contender this year. Wisconsin wins.

Washington at LSU: Washington has a solid QB, they knocked off San Diego St week 1. LSU was a few touchdowns from being national champs last year. LSU wins.

Nebraska at UCLA: Taylor Martinez looked great passing the ball in their first game. If he keeps that up Nebraska will have one of the better offenses in the country. UCLA is kind of a hard team to predict, Nebraska wins.

Georgia at Missouri: Missouri's first SEC game comes against Georiga led by QB, Aaron Murray. Mizzou better bring their A game. I think Georgia wins.

Illinois at Arizona State: Big game for both teams, Illinois started strong last year and then disappeared. ASU put up big numbers against N. Arizona. Should be a good game, Arizona State wins a close one.

Oklahoma State at Arizona: I've got Ok State winning this one, Arizona is a middle of the road team, Ok State offense didn't seem to drop off after losing Weeden and Blackmon.

Duke at Stanford: Stanford looked awful against San Jose State, they're a way better team than that. Duke might be a nice surprise in the ACC and could give Stanford a run for their money, but I think Stanford steps up and wins.

Conference's
SEC: Looks pretty solid top to bottom, I think it will be South Carolina vs Alabama in conference title game, CHAMPION: ALABAMA

ACC: Could be a rough year again for the ACC with a couple of solid teams. Florida State vs Virginia Tech for the title, should be a great game. CHAMPION: VIRGINIA TECH

Big East: Took a hit with the loss of West Virginia, but should be really competitive. Not a lot of top 25 power, but should be a tight race for the title. CHAMPION: LOUISVILLE

Big 12: Conference doesn't look as strong as they did last year, but did add West Virginia and TCU after losing Missouri and Texas A&M. CHAMPION: OKLAHOMA

Big 10: With Penn State and Ohio State not eligible for a bowl game, some other teams in the conference could step up. Should be a good race to see who will play Wisconsin in the conference championship. I think it will be Wisconsin vs Michigan. CHAMPION: MICHIGAN

Pac 12: USC looks like the team to beat this year, I think they have a great shot at the national title. Oregon vs USC. CHAMPION: USC

None of the non-BCS schools look like a threat to be involved in the BCS at the end of the year. Boise State is down and will probably lose their first game to Michigan State. Notre Dame could be a little better this year, but their schedule is brutal like always.

HEISMAN TOP 5
1-Matt Barkley QB USC
2-Marcus Lattimore RB South Carolina
3-Denard Robinson QB Michigan
4-Montee Ball RB Wisconsin
5-Landry Jones QB Oklahoma

I could see USC vs Alabama in the national title game, with USC winning. They've got a ton of weapons of offense.

Northern Illinois doesn't return much on offense, but they do return a bulk of the defensive players. The defense did give up a lot of passing yards last year though, which could be key in this game. I think Vandenberg will have a solid day, I think this WR unit could be a solid one for Iowa. Look for some younger guys to step up. I think the OL is going to do well enough for one of the running backs to have a nice day as well. I think the DL will be better than people expect and this will be a good game for them. The Huskies OL doesn't return many starts, so they could have a hard time with the young DL unit.

I think the Iowa defense will force a few turnovers and will help lead the Hawkeyes to victory Saturday.
