With the Iowa baseball season coming to an end the 2012-13 season of sports for the University of Iowa is now over. I'm going to recap the sports I follow (football, basketball, wrestling and baseball) and see how they fared this past season.
FOOTBALL 2-6 4-8 HEAD COACH: KIRK FERENTZ
The season began with a nail-biting win over Northern Illinois, who went on to win the remainder of their games and clinch a BCS bowl birth, which they ended up losing. The offense couldn't do anything against Iowa State and they lost a close ugly game. The Hawkeyes bounced back against in-state rivals Northern Iowa, and the emergence of Mark Weisman helped Iowa roll the Panthers. The following week Central Michigan came to town and stole a victory from the Hawks. It was one of the more disappointing losses I can remember. The Hawkeyes were sitting at 2-2 heading into conference play.
The Hawks came out fired up against Minnesota and had no problems with the Gophers as they improved to 3-2 with a 1-0 conference record. Things weren't looking as bad as they were two weeks prior. A big double-overtime victory at Michigan State put Iowa at 2-0 4-2, and had fans forgetting about the Central Michigan loss.
That's when everything started going down hill. A depleted Penn State went to Iowa City and destroyed the Hawks by 24. The Hawks were again beat by double digits the following week at Northwestern and they were now sitting at 4-4.
The following two weeks Iowa lost by three at Indiana and at home against Purdue, respectively. Now sitting at 4-6, they needed to win their final two games, which happened to be against Michigan and Nebraska. Michigan spanked the Hawkeyes in Ann Arbor 42-17, and the Huskers beat Iowa in Kinnick Stadium by six to close out a tough season.
The offense was one of the worst I've seen as a Hawkeye fan. I've been watching since about 1985 when I was five-years-old. James Vandenberg had an awful season, the WR's dropped several passes. The offense could never get going, the running back play was solid, but the passing game was almost non-existent. Take away the fourth quarter of the Pittsburgh game from 2011 and Vandeberg had some horrendous numbers.
Against bowl teams: Central Michigan (Little Caesars) L, Minnesota (Meineke Car Care) W, Michigan State (Buffalo Wild Wings) W, Iowa State (Liberty) L, Northwestern (Gator) L, Purdue (Heart of Dallas) L, Nebraska (Cap One) L, Michigan (Outback) L, Northern Illinois (Orange) W
Nine of the 12 opponents ended up in bowl games and Iowa held a 3-9 record against those teams.

BASKETBALL 9-9 25-13 HEAD COACH: FRAN MCCAFFERY
The Hawkeyes jumped off to a quick 5-0 start before losing two straight against Wichita State and Virginia Tech. Iowa went on to win six straight after that taking an 11-2 record into conference play.
Conference play wasn't easy as the Big 10 had one of the better conferences in all of college basketball. The Hawkeyes had to take on Indiana, Michigan and Michigan State to start and went 0-3. They were competitive against Indiana and Michigan State, but the Wolverines destroyed them. They got in the win column with wins over Northwestern and Wisconsin before falling to Ohio State and Purdue. They were now 2-5 13-7.
Iowa upended Penn State before falling in two straight home games at Minnesota and Wisconsin. They were now sitting with a 3-7 conference record and a 14-9 overall record. The NCAA tourney seemed out of reach at this point, but the schedule was favorable.
After three straight wins over Northwestern, Penn State and Minnesota, the Hawks let a close one slip away at Nebraska. 6-8 17-10 record at this point.
Iowa knocked off Purdue then fell flat at Indiana before winning the final two against Illinois and Nebraska. They finished conference play with a 9-9 record and 20-11 overall.
Iowa drew Northwestern in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament and dominated them advancing to take on Michigan State. The Hawkeyes had the game in their hands before slipping in the final half of the second half and lost a close one by three. They weren't invited to the NCAA tournament, but got into the NIT.
The NIT was great for the Hawkeyes as they reeled off wins against Indiana State, Stony Brook, Virginia and Maryland before falling to Baylor in the championship game. They won all of their games by double digits as Roy Marble led the team. A solid effort for the Hawkeyes.

BASEBALL 10-14 22-27 HEAD COACH: JACK DAHM
Another disappointing season for the Iowa baseball team recently ended. The Hawkeyes started off pretty decent, knocking off high-powered New Mexico in Corpus Christi, but couldn't seem to get the ball rolling after that. Matt Dermody dominated on the mound this year, but Sasha Kuebel struggled to find his command that he had last season. The offense couldn't put much together either lacking extra base hits, only hitting two home runs on the season. The Hawkeyes lost six games by one run this year. They let a couple of leads slip late in games as well, but they were good in extra winnings going 6-1.
Just days ago it was announced that Jack Dahm's contract would not be renewed and the Hawks will begin searching for a new coach. Dahm put together some nice recruiting classes, but just couldn't get it going in the win column. This year's very young team could turn into a good one in a couple of years.
